1) I've suddenly developed a renewed interest in NLP. But I only want to learn techniques that are effective. For now, I don't really care how they work. There is a quote by Linus Torvalds - 'Talk is cheap. Show me the code'. I think a corrolary should be 'Theories are cheap. Show me the action.'
2) Of all the subjects that I had to study ( of which some I had to endure) during my undergrad years, the only one at which I absolutely sucked was Engineering Graphics. It was almost like ' Say no to Grahics' was a part of me. While my friends would sketch isometric views from orthographic ones, I would patiently watch them do it, while remaining cluless about how to do it myself. My absolute lack of skill in graphics was only exceeded by my absolute lack of motivation to get better at it. I think the rigidity of having to draw things precisely using fancy equipment irritated me. Anyhow, with the exams drawing near, and me showing no signs of progress, I finally turned to what I called the ' I Blink therefore I cram' approach ;) I 'practiced' a few examples, and scraped through the exam :) The ratio of my maths score to the graphics score turned out to be eerily close to a very famous irrational number. Things sometimes do come a full circle.
3) Many peole fall into one of these 2 categores - Those who ought to be as confident as they are competent, and those who ought to be as competent as they are confident. Maybe they should learn from each other.

Incidentally, i too am busy figuring out the whole NLP idea as part of some work-based research. Its a jungle out there!
The only reason i loved engineering graphics was i got to carry the roll of drawing sheets and related equipment. Made me finally look like a sophisticated engineer :)). Except the days that also involved wearing a non-descript workshop uniform :(
Did you mean natural language processing or neuro linguistic programming ? I know next to nothing about natural language processing:) I was referring to neuro linguistic programming.
I also agree da, that equipment ( I think it was called rafter) and the long cylindrical box gives the engineer look ;)
