Random thoughts

Given than I was born in Pondicherry, watching 'Life of Pi' was long overdue. And despite the somewhat depressing tone, I actually really liked the movie !

By disciplining myself to apply some simple strategies in a systematic manner, I've managed to considerably increase my productivity. Most of these 'strategies' are so simple that they would appear to be platitudes were I to reproduce them here. To summarise, if a cliche is circulated often enough, there must be some element of truth to it :)

I feel like I'm starting to grow older and younger at the same time ! So on an average, I continue to be who I am ;)

I was very unhappy to find that the Reader's Digest declared bankruptcy a while back. I grew up on the Digest in the early and mid-nineties, and it has had as much influence on my views on what constitutes humour as Wodehouse has. Actually not just view on humour, but views on life..

Wow, can't believe Readers Digest has declared bankruptcy!

I would love to her your productivity-boosting strategies! I will not call them cliches, and even if they were, I will only have new-found respect for them :)

Alright Neeraja ! Don't tell me I didn't warn you :-)

I believe there are 3 parts to being productive. Actually only recently have I become a big convert to each of these .

1) Planning - A thought is just a thought until it is put down on paper. I feel 10% of time in any activity should be spent on planning. I am already seeing results by applying this diligently.

2) Being action oriented - To be willing to take action and do things with the knowledge that many of them will not pan out the way we expected. This is about going ahead and doing what we 'know' we ought to be doing even if it feels unpleasant to do it right now.

3) Being a finisher - To finish each task we begin. And if we don't wish to continue doing something, to 'decide' and bring it to closure. Dangling threads from incomplete activities where we still waiting to take difficult decision waste valuable time and energy. Either decide and finish an activity, or decide to stop doing it and move on to something else.

But I think the secret is in learning to be relaxed while being action-oriented... Anyhow, that is a different topic..

I can recommend two great resources -

1) http://www.marcandangel.com/2012/01/22/12-things-successful-people-do-differently/

2) This book called 'Eat that frog' that is on my recommended books list

Thank you so much for sharing this Karthik! I really really appreciate you writing these out. I especially like point 3, and the way you've succinctly expressed everything. Being "relaxed" while doing all 3 is what I probably need to work on the most ;). But, thanks again for taking time to leave these pointers and for providing the other two resources!
