Phd perks
I decided to pop into my lab for a few minutes this afternoon. As I parked my car, and walked towards the entrance to the building, I saw 2-3 people standing outside the lab. Inquiries revealed that the security guard had spotted a snake entering the building! This enterprising guard had followed the snake in, and locked the doors as soon as it got into one of the rooms.
Couple of snake-catchers soon arrived from the Ecological Sciences department! Now, I'm not particularly scared of snakes unless you place one within one foot of me. The fairly big rat-snake meanwhile had found a cosy spot behind a massive bookshelf. With some manual labour on our part, and with the expert persuading it with a stick, the snake soon nimbly escaped the area only to get into another unreachable spot ! The security guard meanwhile engaged in a running commentary on how scared he was of snakes, and how often spotted them at night, and stay glued to his position. Nevertheless, I applaud him for facing his fears, and locking the snake in! It would've been disastrous for a student to be caught by surprise tomorrow!
The expert finally caught hold of the snake by its tail. We took a few pics, and they then packed the snake into a bag to release it in a more appropriate spot on the campus. Interesting day.. :-)
Here's also wishing you and your family a very happy Diwali ! Hope it brings you lots of happiness, peace, and laughter !:-)

Lucky to have an Ecological Sciences Dept nearby. :) What a scare!
Hope you had a happy and fun Deepavali! Where are the pictures of the snake? :)
BWG - Ya, the snakecatcher is actually a grad student doing research on snakes !:-)
Neeraja - Thanks, it was a fun Deepavali ! Hope yours was happy too! Ah, so you want photographic evidence before you believe the story? :-P I was thinking about putting up some pictures, but eventually decided not to :-) Would be kind of 'out of character' for this blog :-)
C'mon! I do believe your story, but I want to see the snake too! :)
A snake would go very well with the ostrich picture and the green landscape of your template ;).
Neeraja, Haha !:-) I wouldn't mind putting up a cartoon image of a snake, but that of a real one.. ; lemme think :-)
For someone who loves snakes, I spot them so rarely! :( I would've loved to be around!
