Silent thoughts

When the mind is blank and there's nothing to write
When all I can think of is banal and trite
When I pinch from myself and reproduce it here
And when the world of ideas seems nowhere near

How in the world should I get myself going ?
Figuratively I mean, for I don't need a boeing
I step into the sun as I emerge from the bed
hoping its rays will light up the bulb in my head

'Six degrees of separation' we're told all along
No it ain't six, and I think they got it wrong
It doesn't take 6 steps to connect to another soul
The world is much closer when seen as a whole

So what is this connection that all of us share?
Our mutual acquaintance when things seem unfair
Mr Murphy it is, and I guess that rings a bell
The link that binds us when things don't go so well

So 'two degrees of separation' is the real truth
A secret I discovered to be conveyed to the youth
Standing in the sun, these thoughts occupy my mind
as neurons work in tandem so that answers I find

From the dark clouds emerges a sliver of light
bringing with it a simple flash of insight
It is good now and then to have nothing to say
and to have the silence golden hold its sway

To listen to leaves rustle and the cuckoo sing
to enjoy the silence; the many joys it can bring
is something that mere words will fail to capture
these fine moments.. when silence holds me in rapture

This isn't banal for sure. Beautiful poem, deep insights :). I am always appreciate of people who can rhyme so well and convey plenty of meaning :).

Great piece of work - simple and profound... ! If this is the result on a day where the mind is being lazy, i sure am waiting for the products of a well oiled brain machine... ;)

Karthik's signature style - Wisdom, sleek and simple :-)

I myself don't like to explain poems, sometimes so I don't like to ask you either. I'd say I understood 90% of the crux of the philosophy here, but want to understand it 100% as you mean it, so may I ask you to explain this part:

Thanks Neeraja, for the generous comments:-)

Aditya, I'm guessing that's a silent comment :-)

Suvasini - Thanks ! That's too much pressure :-) I can't say if the posts will get better or worse !:-)

Hey Harry, great to hear from you ! thanks da, hope you're doing fine ! Will catch you :-)

Anonymous - Thank you :-) There is this notion of 'six degrees of separation' according to which any two people on the planet are connected by a maximum of 6 steps. Meaning, for any two people 'A' and 'G',we can find people B,C etc such that A knows B, who knows C, who knows D, and so on upto G. I was saying this six steps is a highly conservative estimate, since all of us are familiar with Murphy, of the Murphy's law fame. So simply via Murphy, anyone can connect to anyone else !

Karthik, Yes, I read up on six degrees when I saw this post coz I only vaguely remembered...

So you mean, any persons X and Y, if faced with a common problem, will become friends... but why two degrees? wont it be one degree? So just wanted to know why you said so.

Anonymous, I said two degrees because there are two steps - One from person 1 to Murphy, and the next from Murphy to person 2 !:-) I was looking at Murphy as the common friend ( or enemy :-) I haven't checked to see whether 6 degrees means that there are 6 intermediate people, or 5 intermediate ones. I assumed five, cos that would make it 6 steps :-)

Oh nice :-) Ok, sorry for torturing you Karthik :-)

Btw, I loved these lines in specific:

"It is good now and then to have nothing to say
and to have the silence golden hold its sway"

Anonymous, ha ha no torture and all !:-) Thanks for taking so much interest in this poem :-) Actually those two lines contain the crux ; the rest of the poem is redundant :P
