Ain't life a celebration ?
He was a solemn soul; a man of dignified bearing and aristocratic reserve. Under his jurisdiction, it was illegal to smile. "It takes only 17 muscles to smile, but 43 to frown ", you 'd remind him, only to have him respond with 'And none to maintain the stiff upper lip.' If you risked smiling at him, he would respond with an expression that, depending on your personality type would leave you feeling mildly guilty, or scurrying for cover.
Indeed if you took a snapshot of his facial expression before and after the utterance of a joke, and handed over the two pics to an eagle-eyed youngster armed with a magnifying lens for a 'Find six differences between the two pictures' contest, the youngster, having subjected them to intense scrutiny, would hand them back to you with 'Hey mister ! No kidding me ! These are two copies of the same pic ! Now, where's the strawberry milkshake you promised?'. Such was the solemn soul.
He blamed serendipity for not turning up to make his life a grand celebration. That however, wasn't of much use as serendipity doesn't have a conscience.
Indeed, how many people do you know who blame serendipity for not turning up ? Or discover that the sequence of events as they unfold don't live up to the prescient development they had constructed in their own minds? I think life doesn't always turn out the way we expect it to, but any way you look at it, I think its a celebration ! It really is a long movie which needs an unexpected twist now and then to keep it interesting. Eventually it all works out; if not, hopefully there will be a sequel :-) But the trick, just like in movies, is to emerge from every scene with the spirit intact, raring to go and meet the next day head on, and who knows, serendipity just might turn up !

Love this post for its optimism and writing! I specifically loved the second paragraph - the long, yet perfect and funny sentence is so very much Wodehouse-eque! :)
:))
