Would it constitute a heinous crime
to write poems that unabashedly rhyme?
Especially if they are silly and light
and like this one, maybe banal and trite?
Maybe it would, but I do not care
For 'serious' poetry, I have not any flair
'Nor for other types', you might well say
True, but this keeps boredom at bay !
There do come days when says my brain
'I'm off work today, I have a sprain'
I have no choice but to respect its wish
To pass the time, for reasons I fish !
The brave reader who's ventured this far
Hasn't closed his doors but left them ajar
Deserves I think an escape from this trap
The poem is done, & I'll return to my nap !

He he..non-rhyming poetry is sure overrated...some of the best read/regarded poets have ensured that their poetry rhymes..infact Ogden Nash went an extra mile and tweaked words so they would rhyme..
so just throw cynicism to the winds and bask in the rhyming space..!
Lovely :). Rhyming poetry is almost always far more fun than any other kind, even more so when it makes sense ! Just look at Ogden Nash and Dr. Seuss :)
Hope the nap inspires you to come up with some more ;)
Haha! Brilliant! :)
Heinous Crime? This one? Well, not even mild!
Harmless humor it is, eyes like those of a child!
Banal, silly, trite and nothing but rhyme?
No way! On spirit and fun, its fresh squeeed lime!!
You should read Ogden Nash to understand how much fun rhyming poems are. I enjoyed this. Isn't it ironic how your "disinterest" in unrhymed poetry leads you to write such funny ryhmed poems.
Lots of people suggesting Nash here ! Thanks! I've read a bit of Nash actually - remember one on a visit to the dentist, and another on insouciance/nouciance:-) Should try more. Do let me know if you have any specific ones to recommend!
Anonymous1 - Yes, I too think that non-rhyming poetry is over-rated! Thought, I partly think that cos I don't understand it :-) Thanks, yes, will enjoy this rhyming space;-)
SecondSight - Thannks for the generous comment :-) I def do think rhyming poetry is lots of fun! Actually even Roald Dahl, if I remember right had a few v nice ones in Charlie and the choc factory. Haven't tried Dr Seuss before; thanks for the reco !:-)
Neeraja - Thanks :-)
Anonymous2 - Haha ! That was a witty one :-) Thanks ! Cheers to spirit and fun !:-)
Rafiki - Thanks ! Oh I just like rhyming poems, and hence write them. My lack of inclination for 'serious' poetry is not connected to this tho :-) Thanks for the Nash reco, will try some more !
Well... needless to say it was brilliantly funny... And yes Nash is a must read. There is a beautiful collection of his work available at many bookstores.
As for rhyming, well it is more challenging to convey depth and meaning within the constraints of rhyme and i think poems without rhyme get off easy (though better a non-rhyming poem with meaning than some fluffy, nonsensical rhyme...).
I'd also much rather read prose than poems without rhyme but then I never know when things change for me in this exploratory phase.
Looking forward to more from you...
Here ya go, a personal favorite-

I also love Vikram Seth's quatrains- he has a rare ability to mix serious ideas and humor and make them rhyme as well.
Suvasini - Thanks !:-) Yes, I really should try some Nash. Actually I quite like nonsensical poems as long as they don't pretend to be profound :-) I'd definitely prefer prose myself to poems that don't rhyme !
Secondsight - That was wonderful!:)I really should try more Dr Seuss! Thanks for sharing the link :-) I haven't read Vikram Seth either. Will look up online and read some !
When you want life in harmony,
You see words playing with each other in symphony.
That’s a kind of a magic with no effort..
But when you are rhyming,
And know that you are enjoying,
That’s the moment you need
Like the waterfall in a desert.
