Don't you think

authenticity is highly under-rated ?

Yes, surely. But sometimes it is over-rated - such as the zillion patents that the s/w industry churns out!

Originality is sometimes over-rated- when people sacrifice aesthetics for the sake of originality! Authenticity- depends on the context, I think :)

Neeraja- I didnt catch the link between the s/w industry patents and authenticity!

Secondsight - ya, I agree; originality without aesthetics has no value ! I should've been clearer:-) I meant authenticity in people !

Oh I meant authenticity of ideas. in the s/w world, a scroll bar and radio buttons are patented as authentic ideas that need to be copy-righted. And there is no end to such copy-righting in the name of protecting and rewarding authenticity. But perhaps the word takes on a different connotation in their world!

Oh ok ! I resent patenting of all trivial things, and I do think many things ought not to be patented at all. Infact, I remember an Australian lawyer patented the wheel, just to illustrate loopholes in the legal process!:) And someone else patented multiplcation by zero !

Really? What about when a person is an authentic copy of someone else? Is he/she being authentic?

Authenticity in people- In my opinion, most people don't spend enough time (or courage) thinking about whether they're authentic/ original or not, or whether they should be :). And if they don't think about it, how can you or I decide how they rate it? :)

Rafiki - I think authentic copy is an oxymoron:-) So that doesn't count in my opinion!

SecondSight - I simply meant when people are being themselves, they deserve more credit than what we probably imagine. Authenticity is conspicuous only by its absence, so when people have it, we dont seem to notice it :-)

@Karthik: Good point. I did not think of an oxymoron.
