How to Prove it ?

Those dreaded monsters that we call proofs - have we ever wondered what effects they might have on the profs? Here is a light-hearted take on how different instructors might adopt unusual techniques to prove those darn theorems !

1)Proof by character assesment - 'Prof Mahesh told me that this theorem is true. I have always trusted him on such matters. Hence proved.'

2)Proof by psychology - Also called Hardy's technique., for he pioneered it. 'This theorem must be true, for if it weren't true, nobody would have the imagination to dream it up. Hence proved'

3) Proof by intimidation - 'By judicious application of general theory of relativity, Quantum chromodynamics, and Godel's theorem, the result is intuitively obvious. Hence proved'

4) Proof by trivializing - 'Ah ! The Pythagoras theorem that states that x squared plus y squared equals z squared ? Set x, y, and z equal to zero. We can clearly see that the left hand side equals the right hand side. If it works for zero, it will work for all numbers as zero is the greatest number ever. Hence proved'

5) Proof by outsourcing - Ideal for the unprepared prof. ' Why don't you students do the proof for a change? Hence proved by the lone sincere student'

6)Proof by threat - Some control freaks fail to understand that their approach does not yield good results when employed on inanimate entities. ' How dare this theorem not be true?! I demand that it be true ! Hence proved.'

7) Proof by management consultant - 'You will need a paradigm shift in order to prove this. Contact me for further details on how we can enable your organization to attain that shift seamlessly. We can work out an attractive offer especially for you once we discuss the logistics of the proof project. Hence proved after a long time and lots of money.'

ha ha! :)) very nice, i like proof by threat and trivializing best! :) we dont deal with as many proofs (like in math proofs) in bio, but proving a hypothesis comes to much the same i guess!

:-D Hilarious post indeed... loved Hardy's proof by psychology and the proof by management consultant...

I love the humor in your posts... Keep it going...

Thanks Laasya. Ya i think proving a hypothesis comes down to the same thing !

Hi Suvasini,
Thanks for dropping by and for your generous comments!:-)

Nice one. My fav has to be proof by psychology. :)

Thanks Rafiki ! The credit for that goes to Hardy, for he's the one who actually came up with the line! I just put it here in this context ;-)

Hah.. loved all of them. Especially the outsourcing one.
