Me - an anachronistic ?

The following observations lead me to believe that I'm probably behind the times.

1)I prefer paper and pencil (I prefer a pencil to a pen,and a pen to a pc) , to typing out things on the pc

2)I don't particularly fancy mobile phones. Yes, they're handy, especially to keep in touch with friends, and in emergency situations, but I spend more time responding to spam callers (or climbing trees, so that I hear the other person's voice better) with ' No thank you. I'm not interested' (sigh), than I do talking to friends. I got the mobile for my convenience(not for someone else's) . So I keep it switched off, when I don't want to be interrupted by a call.(and I'm not just referring to meetings here). Would much rather have face to face conversations.

3)I'd rather do math in the head, than use a calculator, especially if all I need is a rough estimate. Mental arithmetic was a glamorous thing to me at school. Richard Feynman, Hans Bethe, Enrico Fermi- the heroes ! (As an aside, Bethe figures among the authors in a paper whose author list reads 'Alpher-Bethe -Gamow' ! In reality, Bethe didn't really contribute to the paper, and Gamow had added his name to create the whimsical author list. Its referred to as the' alphabetical article' !)

4)I prefer handwritten letters to emails, but then who doesn't :) Have to confess I don't often send out postcards myself.

5)I enjoy Sports, not computer games.

6)I prefer acoustic instruments to electronic instruments, though I play an electronic one myself. (I wiggle out of that one, by declaring that I'm no instrumentalist; rather a composer, and that the synth is a good tool to compose:)

7) I enjoy reading 'real' books, and detest e-books. Somehow enjoy flipping over the pages with hand.

8) A non-tech point - I see some value in occasionally not having trips/travel planned to include all the minute details. Would like to leave some room for spontaniety and adventure!

Can go on, on and yawn.... Would make one think that I'm strongly anti-electron ! The irony of it all is that I'm an electronic engineer, and work on chip-design (chips but not the edible variety) . I'm comfortable with this inconsistency. I believe technological innovations are nice, as long as they help simplify our lives, and don't end up invading them. I sense an increasing tendency towards spending one's time with inanimate things, rather than with people. That's a pity.

I can almost hear someone, upon reading my list, exclaim 'so unfashionable, and uncool no? !' Well, I'm suspicious of these fashion-folks myself. Never seem to be able to make up their minds on what's fashionable at any given time. If the 70's look is in now, I can't help but wonder if they've managed any progress at all in four decades:)

So, who knows ? I'm probably ahead of my time !

Let start a club!
I agree on almost everything in that list, except email. Its just too convenient than snail mail.

Well, I think (or pretend to) on similar lines for most points especially the pen and paper bit. Though mental maths is way out of my league.

Hey Karthik, I totally agree with you especially on the books part! But not quite on the cell-phone thing! It's almost indispensable for me now, now that almost all the people I need to get in touch with are at least in a different city! :-(

Aditya and Amit,
We could start a club, but not sure how many would enroll. Interestingly , if more than half the world population consider themselves to be behind the times, it measn on an average we are moving backwards in time. We don't really need a time machine for a glimpse into the past :)

Pritesh,
ya agree that at times mobile can be indispensable.
